Car crash in Bridge City involving dump truck, injuries reported


ORANGEFIELD, Texas – State Troopers are investigating a Friday morning accident involving a dump truck and sedan near Bridge City.

The 12News team was at the scene and saw a Tractor & Dump Truck Services truck hanging from the pavement on FM 408 in Orange County.

At approximately 8:15 a.m., soldiers from the Texas Department of Public Safety responded to the crash involving a dump truck and a Honda passenger car.

As the two vehicles entered a bend along the road, the driver of the Honda entered the northbound traffic lane and was struck by the dump truck, according to the DPS.

A man and a baby were the two occupants inside the car. Although the child was properly secured in a car seat and suffered no visible injuries, an ambulance took the child to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital for observation.

Honda driver Christopher Cooksey, 29, of Orange, was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Joy Dubose-Simonton.

The driver of the dump truck, a 58-year-old Orange resident, was not injured in the crash.

Authorities are urging drivers to take an alternate route as all northbound and southbound lanes of FM 408 near FM 105 in Orange County are closed.

Since Friday morning, the crews have been busy cleaning up the scene of the accident.

At approximately 8:15 a.m., Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) soldiers responded to a multiple vehicle crash on FM 408 in Orange County. The accident occurred near FM 105 and involved a commercial vehicle.

DPS preliminary investigation into the accident indicates that a Honda passenger vehicle was heading south on FM 408. A Freightliner dump truck was heading north on FM 408.

As the two vehicles entered a bend, the driver of the Honda entered the northbound traffic lane and was struck by the dump truck. Honda driver Christopher Cooksey of Orange, 29, was pronounced dead by Justice of the Peace Joy Dubose-Simonton at the scene of the crash.

The Honda passenger, an infant, was taken by ambulance to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital for observation. The child was properly secured in a car seat and had no visible injuries.

The driver of the dump truck, a 58-year-old Orange resident, was not injured in the crash. Currently, all northbound and southbound lanes of FM 408 near FM 105 in Orange County are closed as crews work to clean up the crash scene.
