Toyota is starting to look really quirky.

Toyota has confirmed that the model, which is officially called the GR Supra, will soon receive a manual transmission in the US, bucking the recent trend of fully automatic sports cars, let alone single-speed electric vehicles. The latest Supra debuted for the 2020 model year on a shared platform with the BMW Z4, both only available with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

The Toyota GR Supra is currently available with either a turbocharged four-cylinder engine or a turbocharged six-cylinder engine, both paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

The automaker confirmed the news with teaser images of the car’s three pedals and the red Supra badge that will identify models aimed at enthusiasts. It will join the GR 86 and the recently unveiled GR Corolla in Toyota’s growing line of do-it-yourself performance cars.

Details about the transmission, such as how many gears it has and which engine it will be paired with, have not been revealed, but Toyota describes it as “all-new, bespoke”, suggesting it won’t be shared. with the Z4.

Today’s automatics are generally better than manuals in terms of performance and fuel economy. However, some drivers find the engagement provided by manuals more entertaining, and a number of brands have kept them alive to cater to this audience, including Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda who has tried to inject more of excitement in the mainstream brand.

Even Cadillac found success with its CT5-V Blackwing super sedan, which saw an even take rate between manuals and automatics.
